No that's a new one to me. You certainly wouldn't need to hear these sort of excuses in mainland Western Europe, sound like desperation to me. You know the people at work who are consistently late and/or don't show up and over time they run out of excuses which end up becoming more and more bizarre and impossible. Well I think that's what's going on here.
