For believers: were Adam and Eve the first humans to live on earth?

As children, we were always taught that Adam and Eve were the first people, but why? Genesis says that God created man and woman on the sixth day, rested on the seventh day, then created Adam from dust, and the Garden of Eden and then Eve after that. Why are we always taught that Eve is the mother of all mankind?
