A vent grille is where air is blown into our sucked out of a room. Like where air comes out of if you have central air conditioning. In the book, you can make the prediction that hes hiding books behind it, because if someone knew what he had in back of the grille, they would tell the hound and the only reason to tell the hound is if a person is suspected of hiding books.
