Yes you should bring a friend and don't go anywhere with him where you will be totally alone as well as you think you may know him from your conversations you can never be absolutely sure of what he is really thinking. So for your protection and even to help break some of the awkward silences up bring a friend who also has a date with her/him, and as for your "socially awkward" description of yourself al i can say is that in my own experience i have found that the people that think they are quirky tend to be the sanest people I know just be yourself the last thing you would want is to pretend to be something you’re not and later when the relationship progresses you have to start hiding you mannerisms that you’re afraid he won’t like, Just be Yourself and if he doesn’t like you for you (Which I'm sure he will) than he doesn't deserve you. There are plenty of men out there that would love you for you.
