Is it normal to suppress emotions?

To me, it's a survival mechanism. I hate to take on others worries and some people around me, as soon as they open their mouths, it is to complain or groan. It's annoying, so I block it out. But it's becoming really hard to empathize with people and I don't want to seem fake. So , is it bad that I'm holding back on these emotions?Is it human?
